30/30 Check-In: Week 1
A full week of poeming is in the books
As I mentioned the other day, I am participating this month in a writing challenge slash fundraiser.
The poems I’ve written so far have run the gamut in terms of style, length, and subject matter. I only had one rule going into this exercise—MORE:
More poems (one a day for 30 days will be the most poems I’ve written in a month in my life);
More authenticity;
More vulnerability.
And I followed this rule my first week. At no point was I concerning myself with “better.” Better hopefully will come in the revision stage. In fact, I’ve already revised four of the seven drafts from my first week! (I plan on posting some of those revisions here, maybe even as poem readings, over the course of the month.) But before I get to better I’m gonna work on more.
My poems from Week 1:
Day 1: “Dot”
Day 2: “Prism”
Day 3: “Revival”
Day 4: “How-to Raku”
Day 5: “Criminal Order”
Day 6: “Holes”
Day 7: “Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky”
You can find these poems on the 30/30 website, and they—along with the amazing work from the other September poets—will be on the website through October.
Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me so far—by text, email, and/or donating to the fundraising campaign. Please keep it up—I appreciate and am nourished by encouragement more than you know. If you’re able, please consider donating to my campaign to financially support Tupelo Press.

Such a wonderful poem that truly touched my grieving heart for our dear Angela! To me,looking at life realistically sometimes borders on circular thoughts and feelings! With any and all circles, I have never been able to see where it begins and see where it ends!
Today my love for Angela,you and your sister seem to be a continuous circle of Joy, Hope and Faith !!! Thanks for another masterpiece!!!
This is awesome!! I am traveling at the moment but will give a proper look when I'm back home. Nevertheless, please accept this as strong encouragement to keep writing!! BTW did you overlap with Ed Kouneski in grad school?? He's now writing on SS too!
